Head lice are tiny insects on the scalp and hair, spread by head-to-head contact. They cause an itchy scalp, a crawling feeling, and visible lice or eggs (nits) on hair shafts. They're common in school-aged children and not a sign of poor hygiene. Only a confirmed live (moving) louse should be treated — nits alone don't confirm an active infestation.
